More About Bracebridge Dental Care

Reopening Office for Regular Care: May 31, 2020

Dear Patients,

We are pleased to announce that starting on June 1st we will initiate a progressive reopening of our dental office. In keeping with guidelines from Public Health Ontario, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and our provincial government, we're moving forward with our recovery plan. We're focusing on gradually expanding clinical services while minimizing the risk of transmission through infection control, enhanced office upgrades and protocols, and physical distancing principles.

Here's what we are doing:

• Extending in-person appointments beyond emergency/urgent services. This includes but is not limited to routine examinations, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, implants, root-canal therapy, orthodontics, crown and bridge, and cosmetic dentistry. This will be a gradual progression over the next few weeks.

• Continuing with telephone screening prior to your appointment – You will be communicating with our front desk staff prior to being scheduled for an appointment. Walk-ins are not permitted prior to triaging via telephone.

• Managing risk through COVID-19 risk assessment - This will be implemented with staff and providers as well as before each visit with patients.

• Implementing a universal mask policy for all in-person appointments. Patients are required to bring their own mask when they come to the office.

• Limiting the number of people coming into the office.

• Limiting capacity in our waiting rooms and other office spaces to facilitate physical distancing.

• Rigorously cleaning and disinfecting clinical and public spaces.

• Installing physical barriers in some areas of our office.

• Installing HEPA air purifiers throughout the office to filter 99.97% of microscopic airborne particles (germs, allergens, and odours).

We need your help to expand our services in a safe way. Here's what we need you to do:

• Wear a mask or other face-covering to your scheduled appointment. If you forget to bring your own mask or face-covering you can purchase a mask on arrival at reception.

• Come to your appointment alone. If required, you may be accompanied by one caregiver or one parent where the patient is a minor.

• Comply with pre-visit COVID-19 screening. Work with our staff and Public Health screening guidelines to keep our patients and staff. You will receive instructions when your appointment is confirmed.

• Cleanse your hands upon arrival and departure, and after touching common surfaces or using the washroom.

• Follow signs and direction from our staff regarding room capacity and physical distancing.

• Don’t wait to address your dental health issues. Our clinic remains open and our primary care providers are here to help you.

We ask for your patience and understanding during this transition. We will be starting to offer routine care again; however, there may be some wait time before you can be scheduled due to the backlog of appointments.

If your appointment was postponed due to the office closure or if you had previously called the office for emergency, urgent, or non-urgent care, we will be in touch shortly to schedule you for your next appointment.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes,

Dr. Mousavi and the Bracebridge Dental Care team

Dry Mouth: More Than Just a Nuisance

It should be easy to seal an envelope, but those who suffer from a condition called xerostomia, or dry mouth, usually have to reach for some tape instead. Dry mouth can not only hinder your enjoyment of food, but affect the health of your teeth. Heavy plaque and food accumulations tend to occur with this condition, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Saliva is the body's self-cleansing mechanism. It helps remove food, debris, and plaque from the tooth surfaces, protecting you from oral diseases. It cleans your teeth and neutralizes acids, which prevents tooth decay. People who have dry mouth are very susceptible to cavities, especially on the roots of their teeth, so please call us today at (705) 645-6655 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hamid Mousavi.

Choosing the Right Toothpaste

Overwhelmed by your choices? Here's how to choose the right toothpaste for you. While your toothbrush does most of the plaque removal, abrasive agents in toothpaste will scour food particles and plaque from your teeth. Fluoride is the best-known toothpaste ingredient, added to make the outer tooth structure more decay-resistant.

Laurel sulfates, the most common surfactants, can dissolve plaque and fight bacteria. They also provide a foam that helps to carry away debris. Still not sure? Ask Dr. Mousavi for a recommendation by calling our office at (705) 645-6655.

Soft Drinks Can Be Hard on Teeth!

From a dental point of view, there's nothing soft about so-called soft drinks. Sugar does not directly damage teeth. That happens when certain bacteria in the mouth release acids that eat into tooth enamel. These bacteria, however, need food to survive and refined sugar is a very potent source. What you eat, they eat. If not eliminated promptly, they hang around to do their dirty work.

The real culprit in carbonated soft drinks, however, is the fizz itself: carbonic acid. A sugary, un-carbonated drink like Kool-Aid is actually easier on teeth than, say, Diet Pepsi. So watch your consumption of soft drinks and be sure to contact Bracebridge Dental Care at (705) 645-6655 to schedule a dental checkup.
